India is the birth place of Chicken Tikka Masala and Curries. Indian foods are prepared with a blend of finely mixed spices quite popular across the region. The spices develop the rich taste in Indian food enough to boggle your mind. The ever-increasing fan base of Indian food around the New York city is steadily increasing because of the large number of Indians who traveled to the land of dreams. The Indians also brought their very own vibrant, colorful, and aromatic authentic dishes for the people in the West. While most of the Indian population is Vegetarian, Indian food is great for people who are looking for vegan or vegetarian food option. If you are a Meat lover, don't get disappointed yet. Indian food also boasts of some popular non-vegetarian dishes too. Few examples are the famous Butter Chicken, Mutton Biryani and Tandoori Chicken are enough to satisfy your taste buds.

This is the best Indian restaurant in the Portland area. And that's saying something considering what it's up against. The food is excellent, the service is relatively quick, and you can enjoy Bollywood films on most evenings. The midday buffet that runs Wednesday through Saturday (I think) is also excellent, and is a great way to get into Indian food if you're a first timer and not sure what to order. If you love Indian food, or have been curious about it, do yourself a favor and try Jewel of India.

My favorite Indian restaurant in the Portland, ME area, Aroma, just went out of business. So I went to Jewel of India last night. Unfortunately, Jewel of India's standards are slipping. The Shahi Paneer was good, the Paneer Tikka was very good (large pieces), but I had to return the Chicken Tikka twice because each time it was too salty to eat. The cook must be a moron who doesn't taste the food. The server routinely fails to bring tea or chutneys here. Strangely, he told us twice that he was bringing the tea, but never did. He brings the usual three chutneys only if you ask for them. The Bollywood video screen here has been removed. In summary: Many tables, few customers. I think the owner doesn't care anymore. Generally, the food is adequate. No South Indian dishes. Excellent parking right by the front door. That leaves Hi Bombay, India Palace, and Tandoor as the good Indian restaurants in the Portland area.

Very good food! I had the chicken tikka and my boyfriend had the mango lamb, both very good. Excellent service, wish a better location, too hard to get in and out of. Surprised it didn't have more people.

if you think that a restaurant in a doublewide on a strip in South Portland can't be good then I defy you to dislike the Jewel of India. I've only been for the all you can eat buffet and in fact I once went on a Sunday and walked out upon realizing they didn't have it. The smell was so tantalizing it felt like a part of my soul was ripped from my body. This is not a restaurant to bring a first date. This is where you congregate with friends to eat some seriously good grub. Some days they put out amazing AMAZING food, other days it is only superb. Some pro tips: Try to make what they make at home and you'll realize that you do not have the ingredients, the time, or the skill to do it like they do it. Don't come here expecting to eat cow. This is a vegetarian friendly restaurant. Chick peas are the new cow? If they're out of Naan, ask for more and reap the rewards. Don't forget the chutney and especially don't forget the raita.

Truly bad. The Vindaloo was tasteless. The Nan tasted as though it just came out of the freezer. The atmosphere is bizarre.

Best Indian restaurant in Portland.

Once a year, my family and I take a shopping road trip down to Maine on Easter weekend. We always seem drawn back to the Jewel of India. This would be our third time here. The food is good, not excellent - but good. The menu is pretty extensive, however, all of the curry variations taste the same (Chicken Madras, Chicken Curry, Chicken Tikka, etc.) loaded with heavy sprigs of cilantro. The restaurant is purely North Indian, and I am rather fussy when it comes to punjab style cuisine. Jewel of India makes really nice aloo parathas, hot and handmade to order. The flavour of the garlic naan is a bit overpowering, but not too bad if paired with dry tikkas or kebab dishes. The curry dishes are tasty, and the dessert selection is excellent (considering everything is homemade and from scratch). The furniture and food presentation gives off a fancy fine dining vibe, however, the stereotypical "Indian" decor is kind of over done (patterned table cloths with elephants, bollywood posters at the enterance, etc). It would be nice to see some more subtle Indian decor to compliment the atmosphere. However, with that said, the feature I like the most would be the projector screen on the back wall, showing a bollywood film with no sound. This piece is truly beautiful: the effect is similar to a mural in motion. Very unique! The staff were very attentive, and friendly. The kitchen staff on break would smile on their way by, giving off a warm vibe. I always think its important when food comes from a happy kitchen, it says alot about the meal and restaurant. The value of the food is incredible and everytime we go it seems like the food is equally consistent. Good food if you enjoy the flavours of Northern India.

I love the food here and the service is great for an Indian restaurant and they are fairly fast what really gets me though is one of the waitresses brings her child and he annoys me he pokes me and runs around the table saying hi x55 no kidding

To be honest, I had been avoiding Jewel of India for a little over a year. I was frankly put off. The first time I went in to the place, I was in the mood for a cheap quick lunch. My goal was to try the local curry. I ordered everyone's favorite: the chicken tikka masala and an order of garlic naan. While I can say that the dish was very delicious, my biggest take away was the price. I'm not sure how it cost me almost $20, but it did. As I was leaving I noticed a giant hummer right in front of the entrance that had a license plate that said "Curry King". I felt scammed. Now that a year has passed and I have had time to try the other local curry restaurants, I wanted to give Jewel of India another chance. I went in today with my wife for their Lunch buffet (offered 11:00 - 3:00 P.M. Tue-Sat). I was very pleased that JOI not only offered a lunch buffet on a Saturday, but that the meal was ONLY $9.99. The buffet had a variety of curries (including: saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, goat curry, vegetable curry and another which I didn't recognize). There was also naan, chutney, soup, fried veggies and tandoor chicken. The buffet was delicious and I felt like I got more than my moneys worth. I will definitely need to go back!

Food is great, the buffet is reasonably priced. The Chicken Tikka Massala is excellent, as is the Saag Paneer and the Naan Bread. My only complaint is the dining room was quite hot. They need to get their AC going. But I'd definitely come back.

My fiancee and I went here on a recommendation from a friend. We were highly impressed. We started with the coconut soup which was very tasty and fresh. We also had naan with lamb which had great flavor. I had heard they had braised goat; I didn't see it on the menu so I asked. They do have it and let me tell you it is delicious! It is braised for over 3 hours and the meat just falls off the bone. We finished our meal with rice pudding, it was savory and not too sweet. The service is fast and attentive. Overall I highly recommend this restaurant.; it is authentic Indian food!

The buffet was delicious and reasonably priced. Will definitely be back! I got the chicken tikka masala, which was excellent and the naan was so soft.

We didn't expect to like this restaurant as much as we like Aroma, which is right around the corner. We hit up Jewel of India on a Monday which is the day Aroma is closed because we just had to have Indian. There was no buffet that evening so we had to order off the menu. The host / waiter, while not nearly as friendly / personable as the staff at Aroma, was helpful with our menu selections. The food was fresh, fast, and DELICIOUS, plus the portions were huge. How lucky are we to have two great Indian choices nearby?!

Very surprised by our lunch visit here. I've been to Jewel of India in Biddeford which is quite good. The service here was very much lacking. Our waiter was a gruff gentleman who behaved as though we were putting him out by being there. Maybe we were, as we were the only diners there for a late lunch. He was incredibly dour and curt. We placed our order off the menu and when our dishes arrived, he waked away leaving us with no plates. There was also no condiment trio that usually comes with food (tamarind, cilantro and onion chutneys). We both ordered the Aloo Mutter which was very good but we were not asked how we would like it spiced, so it was a bit blander than usual. My friend, who likes her food spicy could have spiced hers up with the onion chutney condiment if it had been provided - but when I suggested she ask, she was so put off by the waiter that she preferred not to even attempt to request something. When we were finished, we waited quite a while and no check arrived. Our server was too busy preparing to go condiment cups for the evening about 10 feet from us to pay us any notice. I finally went up to the desk to ask for and pay our bill. After tip, two soft drinks and two lunch entrees cost us almost $40. I would expect better service for that price. When in the Portland area, we'll be sticking to Hi Bombay.

Really solid Indian - I routinely get take out for lunch and am never disappointed! The lamb dishes are a treat and I have no reason to complain about the service. The new renovation provides a warmer and more inviting facade.

More like the GYP of India. I'll be honest, I'm not the most versed Indian food critic but I just wasn't sold on this particular venture. The chunks of chicken were low grade, the sauces that came with the papadum that I ordered were confusing and not a good consistency for dipping. But on another note, this place had to have been the most bizarre and uncomfortable dining experience I ever regretted. For starters, the owner(I'm presuming) turned OFF the music as soon as he made it back to his computer desk that was situated all the way across from the dining room entrance after seating my girlfriend and I. So here we are , the only two patrons in the place at the time, sitting in dead silence while the occasional obscure jangling coming from the kitchen made up for the lack of traditional Indian music(until later when the owner noodled on the keyboard that's hooked up to overhead speakers which sounded like the score to some Indian version of a David Lynch film.) I'm sure they've had better days at the Jewel of India but today was just a total let down and I now i'm $30 poorer than I was. I don't recommend this place to anyone it's just too riddled with bad restaurant cliches.

Went on a Tuesday night & we were the only ones in there. Should of been a sign of what it was like. Our waitress could barely speak or understand English. The food was mushy & over seasoned.

Ok I usually don't give such bad reviews but when I ordered on the phone the guy was plain rude. I did not enjoy the food that much, certainly not worth that much. I haven't tried the buffet though.

We found ourselves here after one of the restaurants we wanted to try was closed. First off, I'll say that we are very particular when it comes to Indian food. We look for bold flavors and rich sauces, and unfortunately, this place had neither. My husband's Chicken Tandoori was good. However, the other two dishes fell short. I'm used to Bengan Bharta having a smoky flavor and this just didn't have that. Overall, it was very bland. Same goes for the Amaritsari Bhaji, which had a very odd flavor.
